Demand for new refrigerated containers is a good indicator of the overall health of the global reefer market. In 2018, the refrigerated equipment industry produced 142,000 reefer units, about half provided by lessors, with the rest purchased directly by shipping lines.

The 50-50 split is good news for lessors. Over the past decade, they’ve seen their share of leased equipment rise from about 30 percent to around half the market today as shipping lines increasingly favor leased equipment over purchasing it outright.
